Warriors' Steph Curry helps renovate uptown community center ahead of All-Star Weekend

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — NBA All-Star Steph Curry is giving his hometown plenty of love during the NBA All-Star Weekend after he and his family spent the day at a community center in uptown Charlotte.

The center is a critical hub for many families - they have meetings and family events.

Friday, it was packed with hundreds of children who got to see Steph Curry and his family unveil major changes to the building that will have a long lasting impact on hundreds of families in the community.

The Curry Foundation is partnering with Chase Bank, Under Armor, and other partners for major renovations to the Carole Hoefener Center.

Hundreds of children will now enjoy playing on the upgraded Curry Court, cooking and nutrition lessons in the Curry Kitchen, and learning STEM in the new computer lab.

"We have 500 kids that we are going to serve in this community because of the generosity of the Currys," Housing Authority CEO Fulton Meachem said.

Fifth grader Juston Hower said he is very excited about the basketball, but he is more excited about the STEM opportunities.

"Many of our families just don't get an opportunity to have a day like this today and then even greater in the long term to have an opportunity to have such great programs for them to partake in," SVP of Housing Services Tomico Evans said. "You can make it to the next level and you can dream whatever you want to be."

Officials said local children will be able to start taking advantage of the programs as soon as possible.

The NBA Players Association also gave the Charlotte Housing Authority a grant that will allow for more children to access programs at the center over the next three years.
