FAA: Landing gear collapsed on plane from NC during icy skid at O'Hare

CHICAGO — Officials say the landing gear collapsed on a plane that took off from North Carolina right before it slid off a runway Monday morning at a snowy Chicago O'Hare Airport.

WTVD reported the plane left from Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro and when it tried to land, it slid off the icy runway just before 8 a.m. at Chicago's airport.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the plane struggled to land because the landing gear collapsed, but it is not clear why.

In a statement, American Airlines confirmed there were 41 people on board at the time of the incident -- 38 passengers and three crew members.

"After landing, American Eagle flight 4125, operated by Envoy Air, slid off the runway due to icy conditions at Chicago O'Hare. No injuries were reported. All 38 passengers and three crew members were deplaned from the aircraft and are now safely back in the terminal."

No injuries were reported.

There was a Winter Weather Advisory in effect for the Chicago area Monday, and some parts of the region could have seen up to 6-inches of snow.

Officials said more than 440 flights were canceled in and out of Chicago O'Hare Airport and 93 were canceled at Chicago Midway Airport Monday.
