South Charlotte road to reopen after water main break

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Officials said a south Charlotte road will reopen Thursday after a water main break Monday afternoon.

Ardrey Kell Road was closed in both directions at Rea Road as crews work to fix a water main under Rea Road. Water was restored early Monday evening.

Morgan Busman could see the huge gush of water Monday that turned Ardrey Kell Road into a stream from the Blakeney Shopping Center.

"Everyone started looking out the window to see what was going on," Busman said. "It looked like the water was coming from the sewage pipe over here, and it was just gushing. A lot of buses were trying to come through."

Motorists were seen driving through the geyser.

"It started gushing, and it kept going for about 45 minutes," witness Lindsay Evans said. "We watched cars drive through it for 45 minutes."

Contractors have been digging in the area, and Channel 9 asked Charlotte Water if that had to do with the incident.

"I know there are mistakes happen with all the building going on out here," resident Jason Mills said.

A few businesses lost water, but the main issue was traffic.

"There is plenty of area around here to detour, so it's not too bad, but it's not rush hour traffic right now," resident Vanessa Mills said. "(In) about three more hours, it might be a different story."

Officials have not said when the road is expected to reopen.
