Waxhaw leaders approve $25 vehicle fee

WAXHAW, N.C. — It will now cost more to own a car in Waxhaw.

Town commissioners approved this year's budget on Tuesday, which includes charging residents $25 per car, per year.

Leaders plan to use the money for transportation projects like traffic signals, sidewalks and turning lanes.

A state law allows local towns to implement the extra vehicle fee.

It will be billed annually as part of the DMV registration process

Officials estimate Waxhaw's vehicle fee could generate $304,000 dollars a year

Miles Cordier, who is pretty good on his skateboard, isn't exactly doing flips over the new vehicle fee.

“I definitely think it is kind of stupid,” he said.

In a town exploding with growth, Crystal Webb said there needs to be improvements.

“You can hardly go anywhere,” Webb said. “I didn't want to get food here because I didn't want to go out.”

On top of the new car charge, there will be a 2.5 percent property tax hike.

“I think I would be concerned about any new taxes given. I am close to retirement,” driver John Medlin said.

Channel 9 asked the DMV for a list of all the cities and towns that have this kind of fee, but was told that list doesn't exist.
