‘We are together’: Local sorority sisters of VP Harris watch history in the making

HICKORY, N.C. — There was a lot of praise for Vice President Kamala Harris on Inauguration Day at Morning Star Baptist Church in Hickory.

Harris is a sister of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, which has about 300,000 members nationally.

Reporter Ken Lemon gathered with some of them virtually Wednesday.

“But look, we saw it,” said Dr. La’Rhonda Whiteside, chapter president.

Harris became the first woman, the first Black person and first person of Asian descent to serve as vice president.

“For a moment, we are together watching our sister,” Whiteside said.

Harris pledged at Howard University.

Her sorority sisters said Harris always embodied the calling of their organization.

“We are always about service,” Whiteside said.

The local chapter had the meeting to witness history.

“We will all remember where we were,” Whiteside said.

The chapter president wore a pin in sorority colors that read “History Maker.”

Local and state leaders from both sides of the aisle reacted to the inauguration on social media.
