Who’s buying up land near Kings Mountain casino site?

KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. — The debate about the Catawba Indian Nation casino project in Kings Mountain continues, even as construction on the project is underway. Now, the land surrounding the casino site, which could be ripe for development if the project goes according to plan, is changing hands, too.

More than 140 acres near the casino has either changed hands recently or is in line to do so, according to city and Cleveland County documents. The new owners of the parcels are affiliated with Wallace Cheves, a longtime casino developer and Republican donor. Cheves has been involved with the Catawbas' effort to build a casino in North Carolina for years.

An entity named Kings Mountain Development Partners LLC purchased roughly 104 acres near the casino site for $2.73 million, per county real estate records. The deed was recorded on Aug. 3. During its Tuesday night meeting, Kings Mountain City Council will schedule a public hearing on Oct. 27 to rezone the land.
