Wife finds 71-year-old husband dead at bottom of backyard pool, deputies say

LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. — Deputies said a 71-year-old man was found dead at the bottom of a pool in his backyard Thursday afternoon in Lincoln County.

According to the the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to a home on Laurel Ridge Drive in Lincolnton in reference to an accidental drowning.

When deputies got there, they said Lincoln County EMS was providing medical attention to 71-year-old Luther Hester whose body was found at the bottom of his pool.

Hester’s wife told deputies that she last talked to her husband on the phone around 1 p.m. and asked him if he had taken his pills to help him keep his balance. He said he had.

When she got home around 3 p.m., she said she could not find her husband. She then went to the back of the home and that’s where she found him at the bottom of the pool.

Hester was taken to Atrium Health - Lincoln but did not survive.
