HIGH POINT, N.C. — A Salisbury mother of three battling breast cancer went to a salon Monday in High Point for a day of relaxation and a makeover.
Shawn Blackwell wanted the special day to be a surprise for his wife Joyce.
“She said, ‘Why do we have to go all the way to High Point to have breakfast?’” Shawn said. “Well, it’s a special place.”

Their real destination was Salons by JC.
“I didn't know what was happening,” Joyce said. “I see all these people that I don't know, and I’m like, are they talking to me?”
The pros at the salon gave Joyce a facial, manicure, pedicure and new, high-end fashions.
Nonprofit Hello Gorgeous sponsored the event.
“It feels good, of course, because as a mom, you're always thinking, 'What does everybody else need, you know?'” Joyce said.
The pampering uplifted Joyce's spirit and she continues her journey to health.
“When you're faced with something like this, a diagnosis like this, then you realize you are more loved than you ever thought you were,” Joyce said.
Salons by JC has been partnering with Hello Gorgeous for about three years.
You can nominate a loved one battling cancer for a free day of pampering at the salon.
