The shooting at Northlake Mall on Saturday brought back painful memories.

“I just thought, ‘Oh my God. It’s happening again. It’s not going to stop,’” Mackin said.

A teen has been charged with attempted murder after the recent shooting, and Mackin is calling for change.

Aveanna was 13 years old when she was struck by a stray bullet after two groups of teens got into a fight.

“She was a beautiful child. Her soul was beautiful,” Mackin said. “Her smile was beautiful. Everything about her, and it got taken away from me.”

On Saturday, customers and employees ran for cover after hearing gunfire.

Violence at local malls is growing. In November, two groups of possibly more than 100 kids started a fight, which shut down Concord Mills mall.

On Christmas Eve, customers ran out of Carolina Place mall in Pineville after they reported hearing gunfire.

Mackin wants more security at shopping malls and a curfew for teenagers who are not with an adult.

“I feel like the young teens need to stop the violence. You can’t give somebody their life back,” she said.
