Woman charged after firing shots while being chased by Charlotte police

CHARLOTTE, NC — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says a woman is charged after firing a gun several times Friday morning - including while being chased by officers.

Around 2:30 a.m., police got a 911 call from the Cookout on York Center Drive about a woman who was “in a rage” - possibly armed with a gun - and was threatening to “shoot up” the restaurant.

The caller said the woman fired a shot outside the business.

Steele Creek Division officers were on their way there when they found 20-year-old Mikayla Avent at the intersection of S. Tryon Street and Westinghouse Blvd. She took off on foot, and officers ran after her. During the foot chase, police say she fired a pistol at least twice.

Officers never fired their guns and were able to arrest her. No one was hurt. Avent's gun was also recovered.

She's now charged with assault by pointing a firearm, carrying concealed weapon, resist/delay/obstruct a public officer, discharging firearm in city limits, and assault with a deadly weapon on government official.
