Woman escapes injury, loses Christmas gifts in house fire

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A woman escaped a fire at a home in west Charlotte Monday morning, according to the Charlotte Fire Department.

Officials said the fire started around 10:30 a.m. at a home on Kendrick Drive off Tuckaseegee Road while a woman was still inside.

"When it started, it was just smoke coming out of everywhere," neighbor Marvin Porter said.

The woman was able to get out safely, but flames ripped through the home, damaging several cars nearby.

"We (were) actually inside the house and could look out the window and it was rolling out, so we (weren’t) sure if anyone was still home at that point," Porter said.

Firefighters arrived in six minutes.

"There was a report of possibly one person inside, so Engine 21 made an aggressive interior push for that,” Division Fire Chief Peter Skeris said. “While they were in the process, the female was discovered by the battalion chief."

Channel 9 learned the woman will no longer be able to live in the home and some of her family's Christmas gifts were destroyed

It's unclear what caused the fire at this point.
