Woman reportedly kidnapped, raped after leaving uptown club

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police said the man who sexually assaulted a 22-year-old woman in Charlotte over the weekend may not have been an Uber driver after all.

The young woman told the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department she was with a man at a club late Saturday night when he called her an Uber.

Sources told Channel 9 that investigators have since learned an Uber was called to that club but canceled, and the woman may have gotten into a stranger's car.

She told police she got into a car alone and that’s when the driver took off and drove her to the parking lot of an office complex off Tyvola Road and sexually assaulted her.

She told officers she didn’t see a weapon but the driver suggested he had a gun. After he reportedly assaulted her, she said he drove off with her purse and her cellphone.

Officials said she made it to a hotel in Steele Creek, where she called police sometime after 4 a.m.

Officers turned the case over to the sexual assault unit, which is now trying to piece it all together.
