HENDERSON COUNTY, N.C. — A North Carolina family says a police dog attacked a missing 12-year-old autistic boy.
The boy's grandmother, Antoinette Smith, said he was waiting for an aide to pick him up Tuesday night in Henderson County but became impatient waiting inside, so he went outside.
Smith said she couldn't find him, so she called the police, who brought a K-9 to help search for him.
The dog found the boy but then bit him on the face and leg, according to Smith.
“He only can speak so much, like ‘This hurts, This hurts,’ or ‘This is bleeding,’” Smith said. “He can't really tell me how this could be 100 percent pain. I would not know.”
The boy underwent surgery on his face and Smith said officers stopped by the hospital to check on him as he recovers and bring him a gift bag.
