CHARLOTTE, N.C. - A friend of a woman who said she was attacked by a group of ATV and dirt bike riders spoke with Channel 9 on Tuesday about the moments leading up to a deadly dirt bike crash.

On Sunday, a woman told police she witnessed a group of men on dirt bikes, all-terrain vehicles, and someone in a car riding with them.

She said the group of riders was driving erratically and endangering others, so she called 911 while following them.

That's when she said 35-year-old Chavis Doby, who was driving with the group, got out of his car and attacked her.

A warrant obtained by Channel 9 said Doby punched the woman on the left side of her face and spit on her multiple times. Police said after the assault, one of the riders started ramming her car with an ATV.

The woman told Channel 9 she eventually drove to a Bojangles on West Boulevard near Interstate 77. She stayed on the phone with 911 the entire time.

She said police sent an officer and eventually, she called a friend. That friend spoke to Channel 9 but didn't want to identify herself for safety reasons.

"She said, 'Please stay with me on the phone' because she was too petrified. I said, 'Well OK, just talk to me. Tell me how you're feeling. Make sure your doors are locked,'" the friend said.

An officer on a dual-sport bike eventually found the group of riders near I-77, got behind them and tried to pull them over.

Officers said the group would not stop and that one dirt biker, Michael Adams, lost control, hit a concrete pillar and died.

The woman and her friend said they want something done to stop the dangerous dirt bike riding they believe led to everything.

"Something does need to be done because this is going to happen again and again and again and again," the friend said.

Doby was eventually arrested and charged with assault on a female.

The incident remains under investigation and any witnesses or anyone with information, including video, is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
