Local woman one step closer to new home at new affordable housing apartments

CHARLOTTE — Many people who waited in the cold and rain for a chance to get an affordable place to live got good news this week.

Linda Miller told Channel 9 she got a call Thursday that said her initial application to live at the Mezzanine at Freedom was approved.

About 1,300 people applied last month to live at the new affordable housing apartment complex.

Miller said an injury forced her onto disability. For seven years, she lived in homeless shelters, hotels and a boarding room as she waited for a Section 8 voucher.

The voucher and the new housing opportunity came together at the same time. She called it an answer to her prayers.

"Everything until now has been looking down on me but now, I think I see hope. I see hope, and it's awesome,” said Miller.

Officials said there are phases to the application process. In the next phase, management will verify the income of the applicants.
