New Bern police officer shot during chase dies

NEW BERN, N.C. — Authorities say a New Bern police officer shot in the face during a foot chase and shootout has died.

New Bern Police Chief Toussaint Summers Jr. said Monday that 22-year-old Officer Alexander Thalmann died of wounds he suffered when he was shot Friday night. Thalmann had worked with the police department for seven months.

The suspect also was killed in the shootout, and another officer was wounded. Police identified 35-year-old Bryan Stallings of New Bern as the slain man who shot the two officers Friday night.

New Bern police say Thalmann approached Stallings on foot to ask questions before Stallings ran. They say Thalmann was shot as he chased Stallings.

Authorities say Officer Justin Wester followed Stallings, who turned and shot Wester. They say Wester shot Stallings several times, killing him.
