Atlantic Beach Fire Chief Adam Snyder said the 14-year-old was surfing Sunday afternoon when he was bitten twice on the right calf. Snyder said the shark let go of the boy's leg when it realized the leg wasn't a fish.

Snyder said the teen then swam to shore with non-life-threatening injuries. He said the teen was treated at a hospital and received stitches.

News outlets report this is the first shark bite this season near Atlantic Beach.

This isn't the first time a shark has bitten a child this summer along the Carolina coast.

Earlier this month, a shark bit a young girl's leg at Bald Head Island, and in early July a girl said a shark likely attacked her as she swam in the ocean at Myrtle Beach.

Both children were OK.
