The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office says in a news release that when the officers tried to return an inmate to his cell after he initially refused, two other inmates moved behind the officers and assaulted them. Sheriff Bill Beam called the assault "savage."

The sheriff's office says it filed multiple charges against 43-year-old Larry Wade Stanley Jr. of Lincolnton, including attempted first-degree murder. He is jailed without bond.

Multiple charges were also filed against 24-year-old Thomas Utah McDonald of Denver and 29-year-old Dustin Logan Ensley of Lincolnton, including assault inflicting serious injury on a law enforcement officer.
