Chickenpox cases up to 28 at North Carolina private school

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Health officials say 28 students at a North Carolina private school have chickenpox, in what is being investigated as an outbreak.

The Buncombe County Health and Human Services Department announced the outbreak last week, when there were 13 cases, and updated the figures Monday. News outlets report on of those cases is a child who doesn't attend the same school as the others.

While health officials didn't identify the school, Asheville Waldorf School sent a statement to news outlets announcing they had provided the health department with information about chickenpox at the school.

Buncombe County Medical Director Dr. Jennifer Mullendore says students who can't provide proof of vaccination against chickenpox have been quarantined for 21 days.

The private school serves students from early childhood through sixth grade.
