Dead bear found at NC State was hit by car

RALEIGH, N.C. — (AP) — State officials say the black bear found dead on a bench on the North Carolina State University campus was apparently hit by a car and had not been shot.

N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission spokesman Geoff Cantrell said the results of a preliminary unofficial necropsy indicated the bear was hit by a vehicle. The commission said it would release more information after receiving the necropsy report.

N.C. State Police Maj. David Kelly says the roughly 200-pound bear was found by a groundskeeper early Tuesday in the Brickyard, an open gathering space in front of the central library. Kelly says the animal was dead before it was left on campus.

Cantrell said the adult male bear was in good health when it died.
