Fantasy sport regulation bill resurfaces in North Carolina House

RALEIGH, N.C. — Some North Carolina House members are trying to revive a bill to regulate the fantasy sports industry in the state a year after a committee refused to approve it.

The measure resurfaced Wednesday in a different House committee, with supporters repeating it would provide consumer protections to those paying to participate in the online games and prevent industry abuses.

Committee members were divided on the measure, with some fearing it would widen legalized gambling beyond the state-run lottery and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians casino. Bill sponsor Rep. Jason Saine of Lincolnton says fantasy sports don't meet the state's gambling definition because it involves players' skill.

Saine and other sponsors withdrew the bill when the committee amended it to create a state Gaming Commission to regulate fantasy sports.
