• North Carolina man charged with killing missing ex-wife

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - A North Carolina man has been charged with killing his missing ex-wife, even though her body has not been found.

Fayetteville Police Lt. Todd Joyce told local media that 28-year-old Jimmy Lee Proffitt II of Hope Mills was charged Monday with first-degree murder. It was not known if he has a lawyer.

Police say Proffitt killed 28-year-old Heather Carter on July 12. Joyce says there is evidence linking Proffitt to the case, although Joyce would not elaborate.

Police say Proffitt lured Carter and a friend to an area where he shot them. The other woman was able to drive away.

Police say Proffitt's car was found several days later in Steadman and Carter's blood was found inside.

Proffitt had already been charged with shooting and wounding the other woman.
