The StarNews of Wilmington reported Tuesday on a presentation by Katrina Knight, executive director of the Good Shepard Center, which helps displaced or homeless residents.
She told the city council during a meeting last week that the storm has pushed this lack of affordable housing "beyond a crisis point."
Roughly 1,500 people have been displaced from two affordable housing complexes in the area, shrinking the already limited supply.
Knight says people who need affordable housing are being forced to move several counties away because of the shortage.
