Murray Voted New Meck. Co. District Attorney

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C.,None — For the first time in 35 years, voters in Mecklenburg County chose a new district attorney.

Attorney Andrew Murray won with 52 percent of the votes, beating out Democratic opponent Michael Barnes.

Murray will take over as district attorney on Jan. 3, 2011, and said there are big changes coming for the office.

Murray will replace outgoing D.A. Peter Gilchrist.

During his campaign, Murray faulted the current system in place for dismissing too many cases. He also called for higher bonds for suspects in violent crimes.

Murray is a former prosecutor and also a Coast Guard reservist.
