NC Senate Runoff Threatens Democrats Campaign Cash

RALEIGH, N.C.,None — The Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate are looking ahead to a grueling primary campaign that will drag into the summer. It's a schedule that threatens to leave the eventual winner starved for cash.

Elaine Marshall led Tuesday's vote with 36 percent but failed to win enough support to win the nomination outright. She said it was not a good use of the party's resources for rival Cal Cunningham to continue their campaign and that the winner should be focused on the November general election.

He finished second, tallying 27 percent support.

Cunningham said voters know Marshall from her years in office and that two-thirds of them chose not to back her Tuesday. He said the campaign will continue to engage more voters in the coming weeks.
