Rowan girls win Little League Softball World Series

PORTLAND, OREGON — Ellen Yang had an RBI single to kick off a four-run first inning and Rowan County beat Warwick North, Rhode Island, 4-2 on Wednesday night in the championship game of the Little League Softball World Series.

Kali Morton allowed two runs on four hits over six innings for the Rowan team, representing the Southeast in the annual event. She struck out three.

Yang hit an opposite-field single in the top of the first, leading to three runs. Morton added an RBI double for the first team from North Carolina to make it to the softball World Series.

Dyonna Rodas hit an RBI single in the third for Warwick North, representing the East. Hailey Mackinnon added a run-scoring grounder in the fourth to cut it to 4-2.

Community to honor team with parade, welcome home party

The team’s flight is scheduled to arrive at Charlotte around 8:15 p.m. Thursday and officials told Channel 9 that as soon as the bus crosses the county line, Rowan County deputies will escort them to Salisbury, where city police will pick up the escort and proceed to the Salisbury Mall.

The community will honor the team Saturday by throwing a parade.

It will begin at 10 a.m. at Richard’s Barbecue on North Main Street and proceed south to the square, according Downtown Salisbury Inc.

The parade will then turn right on Innes Street, where it will end.

Once the parade is over, the team will be escorted by police to Salisbury Community Park, where a big welcome home party is being organized.
