VIDEO: 10 hospitalized after school bus, SUV collide in east Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Paramedics transported nearly a dozen people to local hospitals Thursday morning after a school bus and SUV collided in east Charlotte.

First responders arrived on the scene just after 8 a.m. at The Plaza and Barrington Drive, and witnesses told Channel 9 a SUV crashed into a school bus.

Police said that a Cadillac Escalade, being driven by Shaquilla Miller, was traveling eastbound in the left turn lane on The Plaza, failed to stop for the red traffic light and collided with the bus, which was headed south on Barrington Drive.

The bus then crashed into some trees in front of a nearby apartment complex.

Police said when they arrived on scene the SUV was on fire.

MEDIC said a total of 10 people were taken to Carolinas Medical Center with minor injuries -- eight students and the bus driver, as well as Miller.

“You need to pay attention, because she never applied her brakes, so she couldn't have seen the bus,” Boyce Alexander said.

Police had the road blocked while they investigated.

Another witness told Channel 9 that they saw the crash happen and helped get students off the bus. They said it did not appear any children were seriously hurt.

CMS said eight students were on the bus and were taken to the hospital as a precaution. They also said the bus driver went to the hospital with minor injuries.

The bus was heading to John Motley Morehead STEM Academy, which is a K-8 school.
