• Assistant chief killed directing traffic in South Carolina

    VAN WYCK, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a 59-year-old assistant fire chief in South Carolina directing traffic after a wreck has been struck and killed by a car.

    Investigators say Van Wyck Fire Department Assistant Chief Dennis Straight died about an hour after he was hit around 7 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of U.S. Highway 521 and state Highway 5 in Lancaster County.

    Highway Patrol Cpl. Bill Rhyne said the driver of the car has not been charged as the investigation continues.

    Straight had worked for the fire department for more than 20 years.
