Officials investigate inmate death at South Carolina prison

ENOREE, S.C. — State police are investigating after an inmate died at a South Carolina prison last weekend.

The South Carolina Department of Corrections said that 46-year-old Michael Harold Brown of Manning died Saturday at the Tyger River Correctional Institution in Enoree.

Prison spokesman Dexter Lee told news outlets that SLED and the Spartanburg County Coroner's Office are investigating Brown's death.

Brown was serving a 10 year sentence for attempted armed robbery. He had been in the prison system since June 2016.

Coroner Rusty Clevenger said a preliminary investigation showed no sign of trauma. He said he is waiting for toxicology results before he can make a ruling on the death.
