Waters-Powell Funeral Home says Ed Young died Tuesday surrounded by his family in the Florence County home where he was born. He was 96.
Young served one term in the U.S. House. He won the election in 1972 over Democrat John Jenrette, who had upset a longtime incumbent in the primary.
At the time, Young was only the third Republican elected to the U.S. House in the 1900s, following the Reconstruction era. In 2016, Republicans won six of South Carolina's seven congressional districts.
Young was a farmer who flew nearly 200 combat missions in World War II. He also served one term in the South Carolina House in the late 1950s.
