11-foot alligator breaks into backyard of Miami home

MIAMI — As the Florida alligator mating season continues, the reptiles are becoming more aggressive looking for mates. That was the case Friday night in Miami, when an 11-foot alligator broke through a chain-link fence to enter a backyard in the Little Havana neighborhood.

Officials said they were forced to euthanize the gator, WPLG reported.

Capt. Ignatius Carroll Jr., a spokesman for Miami Fire Rescue, said firefighters found the alligator just after 11 p.m., the television station reported.

At first, firefighters believed the gator was an unconscious person, WSVN reported.

“As they got closer, they noticed that this was not a person but actually an 11-foot alligator,” Carroll said.

Firefighters called in agents with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Carroll said. A trapper was able to remove the reptile from the backyard after a fight, WLPG reported.

Officials said the decision to euthanize the alligator came after rainy conditions put the trapper's safety in jeopardy, WSVN reported.

“The ground is wet, the alligator is wet. He didn’t want to take a chance, so the trapper made the decision to put the alligator down,” Carroll told reporters.
