Ford recalls 1.2M vehicles over suspension, transmission, engine issues

DEARBORN, Mich. — Ford Motor Company is recalling more than one million vehicles in four separate safety recalls, the company said in a Wednesday news release.

Affected vehicles include select 2011-17 Ford Explorer vehicles, select 2013 Ford F-150 vehicles,  select 2009-16 Ford Econoline vehicles and select 2010-17 Ford Taurus, 2009-17 Ford Flex, 2009-15 Lincoln MKS and 2010-17 Lincoln MKT vehicles. The Taurus, Flex, and Lincoln recalls are in Canada only.

The affected Ford Explorers have an issue with the rear suspension in which drivers may have a fractured rear toe link, which could affect steering control and lead to a crash.

"One customer reported hitting a curb when the toe link broke," the company said. "Ford is not aware of any reports of injury related to this condition in markets included in this action."

About 1.2 million vehicles in the US and federalized territories are affected.

Ford F-150 vehicles with 6-speed automatic transmission are being recalled for a transmission calibration issue. The vehicles were reprogrammed as part of another recall, but the updates were not completed to prevent transmission issues, such as an intended downshift or illumination of the malfunction indicator light. Such issues could lead to loss of vehicle control and a crash. About 107,850 vehicles in the US are affected. Ford has not been made aware of any incidents related to the issue.

Ford Econoline vehicles equipped with a 5R110W transmission, 5.4-liter engine and a school bus or ambulance prep package are being recalled for engine issues. The affected vehicles have a discharge weld that could fail and cause a loss of ability to accelerate from a stop, according to reports to Ford. More than 3,800 vehicles in the US are affected.
