HGTV's 'Flip or Flop' couple separate after gun-involved incident

Tarek and Christina El Moussa, hosts of HGTV's hit show Flip or Flop, visited the HGTV Santa HQ at Lakewood Center.

Tarek and Christina El Moussa, of HGTV's "Flip or Flop," have called it quits after seven years of marriage.

In a statement to People, the couple said the decision to go their separate ways came after an incident earlier this year in which guns were involved.

"Like many couples, we have had challenges in our marriage," the pair said in the statement. "We had an unfortunate misunderstanding about six months ago and the police were called to our house in an abundance of caution. There was no violence, and no charges were filed."

According to TMZ, deputies were dispatched to the couple's home in May after receiving "a call of a possibly suicidal male with a gun."

Witnesses claim they saw Tarek run out of the home with a gun and down a hiking trail, according to TMZ.

Police reportedly caught up with Tarek and ordered him to drop the weapon. He complied with orders and told deputies that he had left his home to "blow off some steam" and that the gun was for his own protection from mountain lions and rattlesnakes, TMZ reported. When deputies returned to the home, they seized five guns, including an AR-15.

The couple told People this month that they sought counseling to "sort out" the relationship but recently decided to separate while they re-evaluate "the future of (their) marriage."

The El Moussas said they plan to co-parent their children, 1-year-old son Brayden and 6-year-old daughter Taylor.

"During the process, we are committed to our kids and being the best parents we can be," they said in the statement. "We will continue to work through this process civilly and cooperatively, and plan to continue our professional life together."
