New Mexico woman accused of driving electric scooter while drunk

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A New Mexico woman is accused of driving an electric scooter while intoxicated and driving the wrong way down an Albuquerque street,  KRQE reported.

Lily Romero, 26, was arrested Wednesday night, according to Albuquerque police. The DWI arrest comes six days after the city of Albuquerque allowed the e-scooters to be operated on city streets, according to KRQE.

Zagster, a company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, made 250 of the scooters available to Albuquerque residents after City Councilor Pat Davis pushed through legislation allowing e-scooter rentals, the Albuquerque Journal reported.

Romero's arrest was the first DWI citation for new scooter operators, KRQE reported. She allegedly told police she had left a brewery and was going to another bar, KOB reported.

"We definitely want everybody to have fun, but you have to be safe and you have to be responsible," Albuquerque police Officer Simon Drobik told KRQE. "Unfortunately, Day 6 here of scooters in Albuquerque and we've encountered a DWI."

The scooters can only be operated from from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., the television station reported. According to court documents, Romero was arrested around 7:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Police said Romero's blood alcohol content registered at .20. The legal limit in New Mexico is .08.
