Rihanna brings awareness to ongoing Sudan massacre

Rihanna took to social media to bring awareness to the violence occurring in Sudan.

On Tuesday, she posted a message to her 71.9 million Instagram followers.

The Shade Room reported that she wrote in an Instagram story,, "They're shooting people's houses, raping women, burning bodies, throwing them in the Nile like vermin, tormenting people, urinating on them, making them drink sewage water, terrorizing the streets, and stopping Muslims from going to eid prayer. There is an Internet blackout! Please share. Raise awareness."

There has been unrest in the African nation for weeks. Following months of civilian protest, former President Omar al-Bashir was removed from office by a military coup and arrested in April.

The Associated Press reported that, while officials work to establish a civilian government, a transitional military council has been put in place. The country's political crisis has resulted in clashes between security forces and pro-democracy demonstrators, who seek to create a democratic system.

On June 3, security forces violently dispersed a protest in Khartoum, killing over 100 people in the capital and across the country in a sweeping crackdown.

On Wednesday, activists called off a general strike and civil disobedience campaign and protesters and military officials said they will soon attempt negotiations, the AP reported.

Rihanna isn’t the only celebrity who has spoken out against the violence in Sudan. Sudanese beauty blogger Shahd Khidir, actor George Clooney and rapper Bas have also expressed public support of the protesters.
