She thought she was breaking up a couple of dogs who were fighting, but got much more than she bargained for.
The unidentified woman in Idaho tried to break the animals up, and found that instead of two dogs, it was in reality a cougar fighting her dog, The Associated Press reported.
The incident happened on Jan. 30 according to a statement released by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game.
Once she realized what was happening, she hollered for her husband to come out of their home; all the while she was holding on to the dog and the 35-pound male wild cat, the AP reported.
The woman’s husband shot and killed the cougar as she restrained it. The woman and the dog were both scratched, but had no other injuries, the AP reported.
Idaho wildlife officials took the cougar’s remains for testing to see if it carried any diseases.
This was the third report of a mountain lion attacking a dog in central Idaho this year.
