10-month-old girl dies after being left in a vehicle in southwest Houston

HOUSTON — A 10-month-old girl died Friday after she was left for several hours in a vehicle in southwest Houston, authorities said.

The infant was found in a car seat in a hot vehicle around 1:30 p.m CDT, according to the Houston Police Department.

The Houston/Galveston National Weather Service recorded a high of 92 degrees Friday in the region with a heat index of 100 degrees, according to the Houston Chronicle.

According to Houston police, the child’s mother left her strapped inside the vehicle and returned several hours later when she realized she did not have the child, KPRC-TV reported.

The child was found unresponsive and was taken by her mother to an area hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, according to the television station.

According to data collected by Kids and Car Safety, Texas had two hot car deaths in 2021 and ranks first nationally with 147 hot car deaths since 1990.

The identity of the baby is being withheld pending next-of-kin notification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, the Chronicle reported.

The case is being referred to a Harris County grand jury, according to KTRK-TV.
