ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. — A St. Tammany Parish sheriff’s deputy was wounded while responding to a burglary call after he said the teenage suspect shot him.
Deputy Kenneth Doby was on patrol when a business was burglarized just before 3 a.m., WWL reported.
Doby and another deputy said they believed they saw the suspect walking away from the store that had been burglarized, and wrestled him to the ground, WVUE reported. While doing so, Doby was shot “beneath the back of his bulletproof vest,” St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Randy Smith told WVUE.
“It’s a scary call when you get woken up at 3 a.m. and they say one of your deputies has been shot,” Smith told WWL. Smith told the station that doctors said Doby will make a full recovery.
The 13-year-old was arrested and booked into a juvenile detention center, WDSU reported. He has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and battery of a police officer, among other charges.
The owner of the store, Pete Tulli, told NOLA.com that he estimated $15 in cigars was stolen, and that he heard the cigars were found on the suspect.
In a Facebook post, the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office announced that it was hosting a blood drive to benefit Deputy Doby.
