2 dead, 6 more suspected killed after two planes collide over Idaho lake

KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho — Idaho authorities confirmed two people were killed Sunday afternoon when two planes collided over Lake Coeur d’Alene and crashed into the water.

According to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, initial reports indicate eight people were aboard the two planes and rescue teams do not anticipate finding any survivors, KXLY reported.

Lt. Ryan Higgins with the sheriff’s office confirmed two bodies had been recovered from the crash site, but the victims have not been identified, The Spokesman-Review reported.

According to a news release issued by the sheriff’s office, witnesses reported seeing two planes collide around 2:20 p.m. then crash into the lake near Powderhorn Bay.

The sheriff’s office confirmed both planes have been located by sonar at a depth of 127 feet, KXLY reported.

Higgins told The Spokesman-Review the Kootenai County dive team is not equipped to go that deep, so a commercial diving group would likely need to be contracted to explore the wreckage for any further evidence or victims.
