Alabama youth athletes help feed homeless at Birmingham park

Youth athletes from Alabama got together Saturday and displayed compassionate teamwork.

The 77 Kids Foundation and Southern Xpress 7v7 organizations gathered at a Birmingham park and passed out thousands of hot meals to homeless people, AL.com reported. The athletes handed out 1,300 hot sausage biscuits and bottled water at Linn Park, according to the website.

More than 300 people were fed by the athletes, Southern Xpress Coach Byron De’Vinner said.

“Kids from all over the state were serving and giving back,’’ De’Vinner told AL.com. “It was really a remarkable thing.”

For the eighth year, athletes between the ages of 13 and 17 participated in feeding the homeless. DeVinner said each person received three or four biscuits, AL.com reported.

The day was a great experience for the athletes, De’Vinner said.

“It really opened their eyes when they saw kids their ages that were homeless, or mothers with babies,’’ De’Vinner told AL.com. “It really touched their hearts and they were adamant about doing even more.”
