GARDEN GROVE, Calif. — A California man, armed with knives in both hands, chased his ex-wife across athletic fields during their son’s sporting event, investigators said.
Garden Grove police said Russell Husges, 43, went to the Chapman Sports Complex around 7 p.m. while several youth sporting events were going on to speak to his estranged wife, the Orange County Tribune said.
Police said she was seated watching their son on the field when the boy looked back and alerted his mother that his father was approaching, KTLA reported. She saw him holding the knives and immediately ran across the field screaming for help as Husges chased after her. The boy’s coach and an off-duty officer tackled and disarmed Husges. They held him until authorities arrived.
It is unclear what prompted the attack.
Husges was arrested and charged with attempted homicide, according to arrest records. He is being held in jail on $500,000 bail.
