Cardinals first MLB team to hit 4 consecutive homers in first inning

The Cardinals made baseball history on Saturday, becoming the first team to hit four consecutive home runs in the first inning.

Nolan Arenado hit a two-run, two-out homer off Philadelphia Phillies starter Kyle Gibson, followed by solo shots from Nolan Gorman, Juan Yepez and Dylan Carlson to give the Cardinals a 5-0 lead, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

It was the first time in franchise history that the Cardinals connected for four straight homers in an inning, and the 11th time it has been done in MLB history, ESPN reported.

The last time a team hit four consecutive home runs, the Cardinals were the victims. The Chicago White Sox connected four straight times against St. Louis pitcher Roel Ramirez on Aug. 16, 2020, The Athletic reported.

The Cardinals needed every one of those runs on Saturday. The Phillies came back to tie the game, but St. Louis scored a run in the top of the ninth when Arenado hit his second home run of the game to win 7-6.

“It was really cool,” Arenado told the Post-Dispatch. “And when they tied the game, it wasn’t that cool. But, looking back, since we won, it was pretty cool.”

“That was super fun, and they all came with two outs,” Gorman told reporters. “(Paul Goldschmidt) getting on with two outs got it started, and then Arenado just did what he does. To be able to continue that line, it was so much fun.”

It was a great birthday present for Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol, who turned 36 on Saturday, MLB.com reported.

“That was incredible and fun to sit there and watch that,” Marmol told reporters. “Guys took some good swings, they were on the attack and put up some good swings. That was huge.”
