Coronavirus: 10 people sickened after car ride with asymptomatic woman, Ohio governor says

COLUMBUS, Ohio — An asymptomatic Ohio woman took a car ride with three other people, which led to at least 10 people becoming infected with the coronavirus and prompting a warning from the governor.

“Unbelievable,” Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said at a news conference Tuesday. “Ten people got sick. Two people ended up in the (intensive care unit). Three businesses were temporarily closed.”

It all started after three people rode in a car on the July 4 weekend with the woman, who was infected but not showing any symptoms of the virus. First, a father and daughter became infected. The father ended up in intensive care and had to close his business, WJW reported.

A grandmother was then infected and spread the virus to two of her caregivers. One of those caregivers then passed it along to another one of her patients.

DeWine said health officials are still monitoring other people for possible exposure as well.

“What we’ve seen is just a lot of casual events in our lives where people are not careful. They don’t wear a mask. They don’t social distance,” DeWine said. “Coworkers and family members were worried, inconvenienced, quarantined.”
