Coronavirus: Global tally of COVID-19 cases passes 40 million

More than 40 million novel coronavirus cases have been reported worldwide, officials said early Monday.

According to Johns Hopkins University, there were at least 40,063,546 confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of 6 a.m. EDT Monday. The tally passed the 40 million mark overnight, The Associated Press reported.

Globally, 1,113,909 people have died from the disease, according to the university.

The United States continued to lead the world in coronavirus cases, with more than 8.15 million confirmed infections and 219,000 deaths, Johns Hopkins reported. Meanwhile, India had confirmed more than 7.55 million cases and 114,610 deaths, while Brazil reported at least 5.22 million infections and 153,675 deaths, according to the university.

In the U.S., California had reported more infections than any other state, with at least 876,033 cases and 16,979 deaths, followed by Texas, Florida, New York and Illinois, according to Johns Hopkins.
