According to a probable cause statement, Gordon, 27, was clocked going 71 mph in a 35 mph zone at approximately 11:43 p.m. Tuesday, according to Denver police.

According to court records, police said Gordon’s speech was slurred, his eyes were watery and his breath had a “moderate smell” of alcohol, KUSA reported.

Gordon consented to a field sobriety test and performed unsatisfactorily, officers said. According to the probable cause statement, Gordon exhibited “validated indicators of impairment.”

Gordon will appear in Denver County Court on Nov. 13, KDVR reported.

“We are aware of the situation involving Melvin Gordon," the Broncos said in a statement on Wednesday morning. "Our organization has been in communication with him and is in the process of gathering more details.”

“I didn’t want him practicing today until we get to the bottom of everything,” Broncos coach Vic Fangio said in a Zoom media call Wednesday. “Talk to the league, get all the facts in order before we make a decision on what we’re going to do and weigh the differences between what the mandated league punishment will be and anything we want to do in addition to that."

The Broncos are scheduled to play the New England Patriots in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on Sunday.

Gordon, a six-year NFL veteran who is playing his first season in Denver, has rushed for 281 yards and scored three touchdowns in four starts for the Broncos (1-3) this season. He rushed for 107 yards and scored two touchdowns in Denver’s first victory of the season, a 37-28 victory against the New York Jets on Oct. 1.

The two-time Pro Bowl selection has rushed for 4,521 yards and has scored 39 rushing touchdowns. He also has caught 12 TD passes in his career, including one in 2020.
