Emmy Awards in age of coronavirus: How awards show will be different in 2020

Despite social distancing, quarantining and isolating due to the coronavirus pandemic that has changed the way the entire country operates, there will be an Emmy Awards broadcast Sunday.

But, like nearly all other entertainment events, it will look different than in years past.

The Emmy Awards will be live with 130 cameras in 20 cities and 10 countries, CNN reported.

Nominees will be at home, with families in some cases, and the show is expected to be a little different, knowing it won’t all be perfect.

There are other current events plaguing the country right now including fires along the West Coast.

“The fire crisis that we’re facing is bigger than our little awards show,” producer Reginald Hudlin said, according to CNN. “We’re not tone deaf. We’re trying to make the show in the background of a lot of things going on in this country.”

Some stars who will be taking part include:

  • Jason Bateman
  • Sterling K. Brown
  • Laverne Cox
  • Morgan Freeman
  • Lin-Manuel Miranda
  • RuPaul
  • Patrick Stewart
  • Jason Sudeikis

The annual “In Memoriam” segment will be accompanied by a live performance by H.E.R.

Because the show will not be in one location, the famous red carpet will not be present, the Los Angeles Times reported.

But there will be a preshow.

On E!, there will be live shows leading up to the award presentations that kick off at 4:30 p.m. ET Sunday.

ABC will also hold a virtual red carpet serving as a countdown to the awards ceremony, starting at 6:30 p.m. ET. The awards will be given out Sunday at 8 p.m. ET.
