Ennio Morricone, ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’ composer, dead at 91

ROME — Ennio Morricone, the Academy Award-winning Italian composer known for his work on films such as “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” and “The Untouchables,” died early Monday at age 91, multiple news outlets are reporting.

According to The Associated Press, Morricone, who recently broke his leg in a fall, died in a Rome hospital after experiencing complications from his injury. He asked for his funeral to be private, his lawyer, Giorgio Assumma, told CNN.

During Morricone's decades-long career, he composed the scores for more than 400 films, including many popular "Spaghetti Western" movies. He won a lifetime achievement Academy Award in 2007, and he received the best original score Oscar in 2016 for his work on Quentin Tarantino's "The Hateful Eight," the AP reported.

Morricone’s composition credits also include Gillo Pontecorvo’s “The Battle of Algiers” and Sergio Leone’s “Once Upon a Time in America,” according to the AP.
