The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office, said that Matthew Breedon accidentally shot himself in his upper leg on April 4, WJCL-TV reported, citing records it obtained through an open records request.

Breedon’s gun discharged while he was inside Assistant District Attorney Ian Heap’s office at the Old Effingham County Courthouse Building in Springfield, the television station reported.

A four-page incident report by the sheriff’s office stated that at about 4:30 p.m. EDT, Heap spoke about buying a SIG Sauer P320 handgun, WSB-TV reported.

Breedon reportedly told Heap that he was currently carrying that model of weapon, but when he went to pull it out of his holster the gun went off, injuring him, WJCL reported. It is legal for assistant district attorneys to carry firearms, the television station reported, citing state laws.

Breedon originally told Heap not to call 911, but the prosecutor called police after his colleague collapsed to the floor, WSAV-TV reported.

Investigators with the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office requested that the case be rendered inactive, WJCL reported. Officials have returned Breedon’s gun to the prosecutor.
