CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. — The General Lee, the iconic 1969 Dodge Charger featured in “The Dukes of Hazzard,” is staying right where it is and completely untouched, according to multiple media reports.
Brian Grams, the director of the Volo Auto Museum in Crystal Lake, Illinois, told the Northwest Herald that despite the Confederate battle flag adorning the roof of the racing orange Muscle car, the vehicle will remain exactly as is for museum patrons.
According to Variety, “The Dukes of Hazzard” premiered in 1979, was set in the fictional Hazzard County, Georgia, and the main characters referred to the car as the General Lee in reference to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.
According to the museum, the car – acquired in 2005 – is the last remaining 1969 model from the show’s first season.
