Impromptu parades celebrating Mexican Independence Day force multiple street closures in Chicago

CHICAGO — Although Mexican Independence Day is not until Wednesday, impromptu celebrations over the weekend closed multiple roads in Chicago early Sunday morning.

Caravans of vehicles with horns honking and Mexico flags waving rolled through several streets forcing closures by police, WBBM reported.

“Closures were in effect to keep traffic moving,” Officer Ronald Westbrooks, a police spokesman, told the Chicago Tribune. “There were no incidents or things of that nature. We do not have further information, and are not aware of any further closures.”

Caravans, some with as many as 20 to 30 vehicles, were seen throughout the city, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Roads were reopened by 7 a.m.

The annual celebration that is typically planned was canceled earlier this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, leading to the unsanctioned parades, the Chicago Tribune reported.
